Amiga Sold 1/4/00
Mike Hudack Editor-in-Chief
Gateway has loaded off Amiga, selling everything to Amino Inc. The Amiga is fondly remembered by many, myself included.
I remember years back, before I entered my teens, when my brother was still an Amiga freak. I was sitting in his room, playing Populous. It was a great game, particularly in 256 color and 8 bit sound. Two years later I sat down at my 486 and fired up the PC version of Populous. Dissapointment! Eight bit color and two bit sound.
Gateway originally planned to develop Amiga for set-top boxes and similiar applications. Despite the fact that many studios still use Amigas for art, video and audio, they had few plans to develop it for such applications.
Gateway stopped development some time afterwards, after Amiga´s full disclosure policy clashed with Gateway´s hush-hush management.
One of the main Amiga evangelists, Carl Sassenrath, has gone on to develop a very cool messanging language, called Rebol. Rebol runs on dozens of platforms, with more planned -- and it´s something closely resembling natural language.
OSAll already implements Rebol to some extent, and it´s beautiful to use at home, at work, on your Web site.
What´s next for the Amiga?
