DOE Takes a Break For Infosec

Original Formula
OSAll Staff

Months after the Department of Energy first came under fire for bad computer security, DOE has once again issued a work stoppage.  The stoppage, which is lasting two days, is taking place so all DOE personnel can be trained in computer and information security.

DOE originally came under fire when the US Senate learned that China had stolen nuclear weapons plans from DOE laboratories.  At around the same time, OSAll reported that the thefts took place largely because of poor computer security.

The Department of Energy refused to comment on its computer security and this latest work stoppage, but one Senate aide told OSAll "this had been coming down the pipe for a long time.  Their security just plain sucks."

In recent days, Senate authorities have proposed measures to improve security, some going as far as to suggest a sort of DOE Ombudsman position.  DOE Secretary Bill Richardson has dismissed these suggestions out of hand, saying that he must remain "in charge of the Agency."

According to a Department of Energy official who wishes to remain anonymous, "there´s going to have to be a fundamental shift in leadership for real security to take hold."  This is a shockingly similiar statemtnt to that coming from a source in NASA who commented for an earlier OSAll story.  He similiarly called for a fundamental shift in NASA leadership.
