DoD Is Compromised
OSAll Staff
Itīs been almost two weeks since OSAll first reported on rumors that DoD computers had been compromised. The DoD had issued password change orders and security precautions were being stepped up. Since then, OSAll has spoken to several people at DoD willing to speak anonymously. The answers have been sobering.
One Army Master Seargent charged with some network security functions at the Pentagon says:
"We get thousands of attacks, of course. Thatīs public knowledge. What isnīt public knowledge is how many succeed. Weīre talking dozens here.
The systems they compromise arenīt confidential, thank God. Those confidential systems are isolated. Thereīs enough on these compromised systems to paint a picture of whatīs going on though.
Security at the Pentagon is [horrible] as far as I can tell. My department is well run but still isnīt secure."
A Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade tells us this:
"They donīt want you to know it but we have rooted machines pretty regularly. We keep working on security and itīs getting better but itīs still nowhere near where it needs to be."
An Air Force officer says:
"Iīve dealt with a lot of situations here. Situations where sensitive but unclassified material was removed from our network."
And, finally, a Navy Lieutenant tells us:
"Everyoneīs moving classified information onto systems not designed to deal with it. Itīs unencrypted and in the open."
These quotes come after a GAO report admitting that the DoD is still extraodinarily insecure. Granted, itīs anecdotal evidence -- but itīs strong anecdotal evidence.
