Level Seven Interview

Level Seven, a seven year old group of eighteen crackers, began to feel the pinch of FBI raids six days ago when its members were first raided. So far, five members of Level Seven have been raided -- three of whom were also members of gH.
OSAll got the opportunity to speak with vent, the co-president of Level Seven about the recent raids, his (possibly) impending raid and other issues surrounding Level Seven, the FBI and the recent `war.´
Since the interview was published on OSAll, some have e-mailed us accusing Vent of simply being an AOL-hacker-wannabe who social engineered himself to the top of a cracker group. OSAll spoke to vent again on Monday, asking him about these allegations. In addition, vent has written a response. Since then, even more people have come forward claiming Vent is an AOL kiddie. Nevertheless, however, he´s still wanted by the FBI.
The following interview is word-for-word the discussion between Mike Hudack (OwlClone) and Vent on IRC:

[22:34] <vent> ah, my little secret... heh, my uncle has ties w/ the army and such.. he gave me flash gernades, cause i told him about the raids.. i hooked them up to my case...so when someone opens it without cutting the small wire , they will go off and fry most of the info valuable to them... even if my hd is 2fish encrypted, they might still bypass it somehow.

[22:37] <vent> i dont believe so, we hack, we deface, we dont exactly keep the biggest low profile... heh, im sure someone in the fbi has an iq higher the 30...

[22:39] <vent> nah, i take it in stride... i dont cower to the thought of the raids... the fbi could for all i care, lick my chode.. i seriously dont give a fuck about what they think.. all i have set on my mind now, is the well-being of Level Seven.. cause Level Seven, is my life, among my job, and other small things in life.
[22:40] <OwlClone> Do you think everyone in Level Seven will get raided? And if so... do you think anyone will crack?
[22:40] <OwlClone> Crack as in talk to the FBI?
[22:41] <vent> not everyone will get raided, i know for a fact.. we have members from all over the world... canada, italy, ect....

[22:42] <vent> we have 2 girls in L7 that hack.. (see, hacking for girls ;c])... they might, and i mean _might_ crack, under EXTREME pressure.. but i dont believe so... we are a tight group

[22:43] <OwlClone> Anyway, mind if I ask why you guys deface web sites? I mean, owning servers is one thing -- but why cause "damage?"
[22:44] <vent> we dont always deface.. if a server has a good connection, bandwith, uptime.. ect... we might use it for other things... we deface shitty boxes.. that have no use to us.. and what not.. we deface to leave our mark..

[22:47] <vent> since march attriton has mirrored some of our hacks.... but thats sinch march of this year (1999).... Level Seven has been a group for 7 years, starting for accesing boxes through bbs. but, all in all... probably over 300 sites..

[22:48] <vent> thats only defacements.... we have other boxes.. that we havent defaced.
[22:49] <vent> yes, the entire seven years.. i am co-president.. along w/ foil the president... we started this group and have kept it alive all this time.. and thats why, we will fight to see it thrive for another seven years.

[23:07] <vent> <vent> nah, just saying... its steriootypical for hackers to only be male... there are some girl hackers that are better then some of the male hackers in L7

[23:08] <OwlClone> Now... I'm a little curious whether you target specific servers or OSes?
[23:08] <OwlClone> Do you use a vulnerability scanner or anything like that?
[23:09] <vent> i believe the easiest box to get into is a Red Hat Linux box. . heh.. .2nd would be System V ....then unix, irx, fbsd.. ect/
[23:09] <vent> i sometimes use scanners, and exploits..
[23:09] <OwlClone> Do you tend to write your own code to get inside or do you use canned exploits -- as in, what more often than the other?
[23:10] <vent> i code some of my own... and some of the members code some of thier own... and we use each others
[23:11] <vent> only like twice have i used canned exploits
[23:11] <OwlClone> Now... back to the FBI issue
[23:11] <OwlClone> Are you aware that each website defacement is a Class C Felony and can carry up to a year
[23:11] <OwlClone> ?
[23:12] <vent> yes, but that doesnt scare me.. so i do some time (like 300 years ;c]).. i get to count the dots on the floor or somthing.. big whoop.

[23:19] <vent> when I deface, i deface for fun... like i just did panthersfootball.com today, and the message was, PANTHERS SUCK along with some of Level Seven's thoughts about the gH and our raidings... i deface/hack for fun.. because i can.. but i guess its different with every member in L7.. we all think differently.
[23:19] <OwlClone> How did the members of L7 get together?
[23:21] <vent> Level Seven is really close.. sometimes, in our private channel where we hold meetings we call each other by our first names... weve been together for several years, and i think we can safely say we're a "family"

[23:21] <vent> but it didnt work out... we then took our friends.. and gathered em up.
[23:21] <vent> some had alot of computer knowledge/background.. and some didnt
[23:21] <OwlClone> So you taught the ones who didn't?
[23:22] <vent> we taught each other.... i had alot of computer knowledge, i was sorta a child prodigy.. i had a nack for computers... i learned very well, i taught most of the members...

[23:23] <vent> and it just kept going on like a tree.
[23:23] <OwlClone> I notice that you say on the recently hacked pages...
[23:23] <OwlClone> you say that you're going to keep getting the word out
[23:23] <OwlClone> does that mean, basically, that you're going to keep defacing high profile sites until you can't anymore?
[23:24] <vent> yes, were going to do it.. until there are no more sites to deface, or there is no more internet.. i guess......
[23:24] <vent> as for .gov and .mil sites.. we'll continue defacing them until this fbi bullshit is over.
[23:24] <OwlClone> you're pretty confident l7 can't be put down... do you think the fbi won't go after you guys in foreign countries?
[23:26] <vent> im pretty sure thier safe.. we aint 14 yr olds.. we live in our own apartments, homes, shacks, ect.. heh.. we can move if we wanna ... the ones in the foreign countries.. are like 23, they will move if they need too.

[23:29] <vent> im not a malicious hacker... i REALLY didnt like the people that owned that box... they had what was comming to them.... when i deface, i usually just replace the index

[20:58] <OwlClone> I was recently reading the interview between vent and a writer for aviary-mag. He made L7 come across as a bonefide hacking group and made himself look like a bonefide hacker. From someone that knows, this is not the case. Vent's internet career came from the batches of lameness that AOL impresses on a person. He started into the IRC-scene working for UPSS (united pirating silent service), a group that distributes warez on AOL.

[21:01] <vent> we try to hide our ip's as best as possible when doing shit... cause we dont need the fbi on our ass... i guess someone made a fuckup like i stated in Forensic... and the fbi traced the ip to an isp.. called the isp, got the users username/pass, for that ip it was using ..
