Official Secrets -- Online
Mike "Ender Wiggin" Hudack, Editor
A man by the name of Richard Tomlinson was recruited by MI6 (now known as the Secret Service) in 1991. He was a handsome, intelligent and adventurous man -- the stereotypical James Bond-type. He took what the Brits call a "double first" in Engineering at Cambridge and took a motorcycle ride across the Sahara. At one point, in fact, he served in the British SAS (Special Air Service), considered one of the most elite military units in the world.
He is now a hunted man, however, and he believes his life is in danger. His career which brought him everywhere from Bosnia to Iran ended adruptly in 1995 in what he considers improper circumstances. And in 1997, Richard Tomlinson was jailed for violation of the British Officials Secrets Act, which places stiff penalties against those who release government secrets.
After his release from jail, Richard Tomlinson flew around the world, believing MI6 to be only one step behind him. He felt watched, harassed and followed throughout his flights. Eventually, however, he landed in Geneva.
It was in Geneva that Tomlinson decided to extract revenge against his former employers. He rented space on a Swiss ISPīs web server and placed the names of more than a hundred (estimates run from 115 to 300) MI6 operatives on the site.
British Intelligence moved relatively quickly, issuing what they call a "D" order to the press. A D order is something of a gag order, telling them not to publish any of the names or URLs of the websites.
MI6 then filed for an international court order to shut down the website. Rather than face legal trouble, IP Worldcom shut down Tomlinsonīs site.
A week later, the site resurfaced on Geocities. At this point, Tomlinson threatened to release even more names and maps of MI6 offices worldwide. The British government contacted Geocities and the site was taken down.
At this point, however, mirrors of the site are popping up everywhere, making it impossible for MI6 to keep up. This marks a new era in espionage -- a time when a simple gag order just wonīt do it.
The Internet is moving espionage and security forward miles, and MI6 just wasnīt prepared. Beuracracy has to learn that the Internet is the fastest information medium in the world and that itīll remain that way.
Good luck, government.
