Marines Fall Victim to Virus
10/22/99

Mike Hudack
Editor-in-Chief

Marine headquarters at the Pentagon were set upon by a mysterious virus yesterday.  CNN first reported the attack, which was apparently a worm, at around midnight on Friday.  OSAll attempted to contact Marine officials and was able to speak to a sergeant who had gone home for the night.

According to the sergeant, who refused to be identified, no antivirus software was present on the Marines´ computers.  "There was attention as far as things going out.  Things getting in was different though," he explained.

The worm apparently deleted many or even all of the documents present on the Marines´ systems.  "This could set some work back weeks, if not months," our source explained.

It seems that some Navy systems were also lacking in antivirus software.  CNN reported that the nearby Navy Annex was also affected.

According to the sergeant, who works as an assistant system administrator, many Marines were working throughout the night installing increased security.  According to CNN Norton Antivirus employees were working with the Marines to route the virus, install antivirus software and recover lost files if possible.

OSAll will attempt to contact both the Marine Corps and Navy for official comment tomorrow.
