NSA Ramifications
Mike Hudack Editor-in-Chief
We have all heard about the alleged NSA backdoor installed in all the recent versions of Windows. Whether it is a programmer´s sick joke, a symbol of export approval or what-not may now be a moot point. The industry´s trust in Microsoft security, already at an all-time low, is now nonexistant.
Whatever the backdoor, it is obvious that someone other than Microsoft can install Crypto API components without your direct consent. It´s not really that it makes an NSA entry to your computer already present, it´s that it makes it much easier.
The real issue now is that there appears to be some collusion between Microsoft and the National Security Agency. Almost no one in the computer security community trusts the NSA -- and now fewer people trust Microsoft.
