Ripped Article
Mike Hudack Editor-in-Chief
OSAll published a piece called "Microsoft Security Part One" last week by an author calling himself Krale. We were happy to publish a series of articles by Krale who promised to gradually get more detailed in his descriptions of Windows security problems. He had originally contacted us with a complaint that our Microsoft prose barely scratched the surface of the real Microsoft security problems.
The very day after this piece was published OSAll received e-mails and BBSystem messages from several people who explained the article had originally been published elsewhere (most notably at http://129.105.116.5/fravia/mmstory.htm and then later in a probably ripped form in the Happy Hacker Digest).
OSAll e-mailed Krale twice, both times asking for an explanation in the most polite and carefull manner -- if he could explain we would simply in turn explain to our distraught readers. Unfortunately in the week we gave Krale to respond he did not do so.
It is now our assumption that this article was ripped from itīs original source at Fraviaīs Web site. I offer my apologies to both Fravia and all our readers.
In addition Iīd like to quickly address OSAllīs editing process -- and why something like this was allowed to slip through.
OSAll receives almost a dozen offers for written work every day, but most of them simply donīt materialize. We always agree to see the finished product and then decide whether to publish it then. Maybe one out of fifteen offers become a finished product. The editor then goes over the finished product, fact checking and doing a quick Web search for similiar copy.
In this particular case we omitted the Web check for some odd reason -- this is why a ripped piece was allowed through. Normally such things wouldnīt be allowed to happen.
Thank you,
