Windows to Block Violent Games
Mike Hudack Editor-in-Chief
Microsoft announced on June 25 that future versions of Windows will allow parents to block violent games from their computers. The movement, reminiscent of Web filtering programs and the so-called V-Chip, has already raised the ire of some teenagers. Likewise, hackers are already promising to circumvent the restrictions.
The gaming industry has come under fire lately, especially after it was revealed that shooters at Columbine High School played Doom incessantly. Most gamers and game developers have, however, dismissed the idea that Doom played any part in the massacre. Said one gamer, "I play Quake II every day. I don´t want to go out and massacre my classmates."
The technology behind the blocking system has not been released yet, but some are already announcing they will break it. One hacker said "we´ve gotten past the Web filters. Why can´t we defeat this?" |
