Fifteen Months for Zyklon
11/23/99

Mike Hudack
Editor-in-Chief

The now somewhat notorious, if oft-ignored case of Zyklon, also known as Eric Burns, is coming to a close.

The Punishment

The US District Court judge sentenced Burns to fifteen months in Federal prison, fines of more than thirty-six thousand dollars and probation.

Once out of prison Burns will be placed on probation for three years, and prohibited from using computer equipment.  Lawyers plan to request that he be able to use computers at work, but such authorization will not be available until probation becomes a reality.

The Crime

Zyklon is most famous for defacing the White House Web site, although he was arrested and charged on three unrelated defacement counts.  Each defacement could carry up to three years in prison.

Confession

Once arrested Zyklon almost immediately signed a confession, before even consulting an attorney.  "I didn´t think it was that big a deal," he told Wired News.

OSAll´s legal consultant says otherwise.  "If you´re raided, never -- ever -- tell them anything until you speak to an attorney.  This means no excuses, no statements, not even questions.  Sheepishly walk around, doing what they ask but do not say anything."
